Dutch producers are THE shit. That’s not something I’m pulling out of thin air, nor is it simply my opinion.
It’s highly probable that some US hiphop releases already feature beats crafted by Dutchmen before Nicolay went overseas after doing the Foreign Exchange project with Phonte (of Little Brother), but it seems that project put down a landmark for MC’s and labels to scout our little country through the internet. Nicolay went on to produce tracks for EMC, Supastition, Cesar Comanche and other steady names in hiphop.
After that we read in the State Magazine article about 3 upcoming Dutch producers that FS Green was contacted by some US guy for a beat, and this week I got a promo-mail concerning yet another US-NL collabo: Jaboy Fry & Bone40.
The duo has released a digital EP for free, featuring lyrics by Fry and beats by Bone. It consists of 6 tracks, 5 individual tracks and also a clean version of the starting song ‘Crazy Gurl’.
Since I’ve been on the net for a while, and since every kid with a computer that hosts Magix Hip-Hop Maker (or whatever it’s called) calls himself a producer, I’m always sceptic to new releases from random people. Guess I need to drop that composure, since this EP is actually really nice.
All the tracks are pretty much ‘in the middle’, stylewise. They’re not underground, but definitely not your standard 808 drummachine + synth-melody pop either. Sampled bits are combined with (re)played elements, the lyrics are thoughtful and coherent, and the semi-sung hooks kind of give you a feel of what Gnarls Barkley would be if they chose to go hiphop. This is mostly due to the track ‘Doc Take Me Back’, where Bone takes the last minute of song to venture into a more drum and bass beat without making it corny.
People, it’s free, it’s 320kbps and it has been released under the Creative Commons License. So _get it_ and pass it on to your friends!
