A couple of days ago Mishoo The Drumkit released his free online EP called ‘Born In The Land Of A Thousand Hills’. Being an unkown artist to me I was triggered by the impressive line-up of producers, since it looks like a total team-up from people who have contributed to Mondayjazz!

Mishoo’s flow is steady, calm and uncomplicated while his lyrics are conscious and deep. The main topics are women, music and family, and especially the love for them. With that in mind it’s no surprise to spot the following producers since they’ve already shown in their past productions to be totally at home in that mindstate:
Elaquent and Portformat deliver exactly what we would expect from them. E goes on doing his thing with samples and some subtle pads and rhodes. PF drops a steady uptempo beat with complimentary synths. Comfort Fit keeps it spacey and minimal while retaining the deep bass and soulful breaks.
Daviz’ track seems thin at first, but that only gives some extra pressure when the bass drops in. He’s keeping the crisp drums a bit on the background, leaving room for Mishoo to set the groove. ‘The Letter’, which is produced by Drumatic, sounds like 9th wonder stepped into a time machine: steady drums with an atmospheric backdrop.
The odd track out is by Duktus & Swede:art, leaving the kick-snare feel behind to create a bouncing 909-driven dancefloor beat where vocalist Shuanise jumps in to finish everything of with a smooth chorus. Dutchmassive backs up Mishoo on the last track on which Comfort Fit returns with his well-known short but ever present drums.
Let’s not forget Mr. Nnaji, without whom the choruses on 3 of the tracks wouldn’t be as phat as they are now. All cuts and scratches on the EP are courtesy of DJ Madsen.
edit: it seems I missed a credit here! On the 1st track by Elaquent it’s DJ Mawdee who did the cuts, not Madsen!
Overall I feel that Mishoo is an addition to the tracks while it’s usually the other way around with rap-fueled music. Nevertheless is ‘Born In The Land Of A Thousand Hills’ a 31 minute package you shouldn’t miss when you’re into conscious rap and deep atmospheric beats. It’s also an excellent example of how musicians from all over the globe (Canada, UK, Germany, etc) can come together to do what they do best: make good tracks.
