Last monday Organik Records released SirOJ’s “Castlevania” on 7″ (buy it here) so this would be a good time to put his work in the spotlight once more. I have no idea when the beat collection called “Vibe Out – beats 2004-2007″ came out and I’m not even sure if it should be downloadable for free, but hey.. we’ll find out soon enough after this post!

Can’t really say much about this collection. It’s SirOJ, it’s a beattape, it’s chill. By now you probably know what to expect from the Slumgillion producer: minimal beats, good grooves, laidback samples and complementary synthwork.

Ok that may sound a bit boring, which this release definitely isn’t. It’s kind of an after hours space-age lounge collection throughout, with a couple of sparkling gems on it. Ranging from jazzy beats to futuristic electronics, you’ve got an hour of really decent music in 30 tracks. My personal favorites are the more downtempo’ish tracks like The Doks, Zwart ~Wit and Who’s Bringin’ It Back.

There’s a small downside to this pack, some MP3’s are in pretty low quality and the volume between tracks varies from time to time. Still, it’s free!

German hip-hop beatsmith Suff Daddy has been making a household name of himself over the last couple of years, dropping his Hi-Hat Club collection and “The Gin Diaries” on Melting Pot Music. Next to that he’s teamed up with Pilskills (Pils Daddy) and Flomega (Megasuff), and has done production for artists like Muneshine and Kissey Asplund.

That sparked your interest, but you’re not ready to spend your hard earned cash yet? Well you’re in luck, because Suff has a nice collection of remixes online for free, called “Suff Refills”.

The Refills is 45mins of pure Suffness, only this time he’s put acapella’s of your (mostly US) favorite artists on top of his sample-heavy drums. Whether it’s chilled-out mood’ism, heavy boom-bap or über-funky disco tracks, Daddy matches his beats to the vocals like it’s nothing. A must-have for hip-hop heads and beat-dj’s!

While the albums of the Swedish collective known as Little Dragon aren’t really fitting our cozy niche of beat-related music, the other projects of lead-singer Yukimi Nagano are much to our taste. She has sung for Koop, works with José González and appears as vocalist on releases by Swell Session, Hird and Ge-Ology. In honour of her works (and a live performance in his hometown), Supa Kool DJ Uncle Q has made a tribute mix for the online magazine ‘The Couch Sessions‘.

The mix consists of the more(up) tempo oriented tracks on which Nagano is featured, making it a nice and smooth jazzy 55mins, with some touches of electronica. With all the tracks from different sources packed together it’s easy to observe how versatile Yukimi’s vocal talents are. Whether it’s trip-hop, poppy electronica or straight-up (nu-)jazz, she seems to get into the perfect vibe with ease, adjusting her way of singing perfectly to the style.

Uncle Q does a great job blending all these different tracks together into a great mix which is easy to listen and enjoy.

04. Quartermaine – Mystic Qool Breeze
While a lot of artists seem to get a little bit numbed an dull on their releases after their first bomb, the Canadian beat-creator just keeps on getting bringing the same dopeness on this ‘tape’ (as he calls it) with old and new beats, as he did before.

Yet again this is almost 40mins of offbeat, filtered, bleeped and dusty beats. Add some commercial-snippets and hip hop acappella cuts and it’s a certified Elaquent release. He can downplay himself in the liner notes all he wants by stating that “poor mixing” was done, it doesnt’ matter because this is supposed to be downright dirty.

After I saw a guy walking past, wearing a “J Dilla Saved My Life” shirt (yea they still sport those. . .) I remembered a release from last year that I want to share with you. Not to diss the lost US prodigy but to show that the world holds more great beat-creators. This time it’s a little compilation from my neighbouring country Belgium:

Infiniteskills (Eric P., LuiGi & Pat Gonzalez, the laid-back.be inhouse production team) collected a total of 12 tracks from 9 Belgian beat-producers including themselves, and put out a 12″ through Rush Hour at the end of 2007. With most of the physical copies gone they decided in 2008 to release the mp3s for free!

If you want to take a break from all the glitchy cut-up electronic stuff, you’ve got 37mins of chilled out bliss right here. Soulful sampled loops and drums with the occasional fat synthy bass is what these Belgians are all about. Don’t mistake the smoothness of this package with softness, the drums keep rolling steady all over the sampled foundation.

A lil’ extra is also included in the package: a promo video containing some nice diggin’ footage stylishly put together and a couple of US cameo’s!

Tracklist:
Eric P. – Is this the end?
Versatell – Clap ya hands
Ame – I Hope that I
LuiGi – Hombre
Dyno – Autumn love (feat Kissey Asplund)
Flo – Love jones
Lefto – Michigan 1963
LuiGi – In my life (in memory of “le mich” van vlasselaer – RIP)
Versatell – Gamble
Pat Gonzales – As I Am
Eric P. – Turn it up
Mr Critical – Almost lost you (in the mist of my mind)

Our boy Johnny Supreme (check the link for his dope beats) recently tipped us about Truly Pheasant & The Sjoel Of Hardknocks – Tweed Prison Tapes. Kinda funny since I already checked it when it came out, in a time when thebeats.nl was just a blob in my imagination. Now that we’re here and kicking, why not put the spotlight back on this dope collection of raw beats and melancholic breaks?

Don’t confuse Tweed Prison Tapes with a mixtape, it’s more like one of those old blends you would make at home on your tapedeck, putting your favorite tracks of that period together. Some are blended, some are just put after each other.

Divided into 4 parts and laced with funny vocal excerpts, the Tapes combines stuttering beats with straight-forward boom-bap and freakishly harsh funk. After listening for a couple minutes you’d think ‘Nice shit.. although I’m missing MF Doom on these beats’, but that void is filled by some dope Dutch and English guest appearances: MT Vessel Steam Supreme, Benman The Bathtub Pirate, Foreign Beggars, Emcee Surya, Dr.Shoshi & Funk E-Technician.

Tweed Prison Tapes may sound chaotic at first, but it’s in fact just plain wild.

Get it here, and go here for more free music released under the Bathtub Piracy Recordings moniker.

The release saw daylight in 2003 (U.S. 2004) through Groove Attack and features almost the complete TDR artist roster, including:

Comfort Fit

Prymer

Saine

It’s hiphop, it’s soulful, it’s groovy, it’s musical. It’s for those who want more than just loops on a beat. The whole thing just oozes of intelligence and conciousness, on both the musical and lyrical side. Packed with beautiful samples and played recordings the tracks range from laidback downtempo (’That Day’, ‘The Waves’ and ‘Summer In The Hood’) to dystopian angsty beats (’Pimp Knowledy (Krii remix)’, (A)part From Footsteps’ and ‘Known’).

Even while netlabels have evolved rapidly over the years, in form and quality, this release still holds the #1 spot for me for it is one of the best mixed compilations out there. Making tracks from different artists sound like they belong together is a bitch, but Practice Avoiding Mistakes makes it feel like it was no thing. Being the first ever ‘netlabel’ that saw daylight, Tokyo Dawn placed the bar on a height that has yet been

While abstract hiphop and downtempo are styles which have been pushed forward mainly by the more western-oriented countries (the UK, the US, Germany and France), over the last couple of years our eastern neighbours have been catching up.

After the majority of easily gotten 60’s and 70’s US records had been sampled and re-sampled, it was only natural that producers would dig into the hardly explored world of eastern, asian and african music. This has delivered a lot of pleasurable productions by, for instance, Madlib and Oh No. But what is a better way to start diggin’ than going through your mom’s and pop’s records? Although the western guys got their hands on some nice records, the cultural natives always take it up a notch.

Although I can’t read a word on the website, last year I ran into diggin.pl. It seems to be mainly a review site for (new) releases in the field of beats and related music, and they’ve released a CC-licensed compilation of free music consisting mainly, but not only, of productions out of eastern Europe: Diggin.pl vol.01 – Diggin Deeper.

Though varying in styles, the main focus of the compilation lies on drumbeats and breaks. Starting off with the soulful track “Wstawaj” by Dustplastic which proves beyond a doubt that polish is not just some rugged coalminers language, you’re being taken on a beat-journey that also takes short stops at rock (The B.I.O. Project – Poppy Red), dance (Gong Gong – Kawabata remix) and reggae (Aldo Vanucci – Last Goodbye) stations.

Kixnare and Jon Kennedy provide the complementary boom-bap on respectively “Time Travelling” and “Space-O-Matic”, breaks are presented by Bontone and Baaba and there’s even an IDM’ish track by Lama, called “Innocent Bystander”. The rest of the tracks are chilled easy beats with mind-drifting samples.

The release comes with high-quality covers and an artist description in both polish and English. I haven’t seen vol. 2 around yet, but I’m very curious to see what the diggin.pl guys deliver next.

In the meanwhile you can check out vol. 1 here

A team of enthousiastic music-lovers/producers digs up and reviews what they think is the best music that is being released through the CC-license.

For this release one of the reviewers, Mo, has selected the best chillout tunes for you with this vision in mind: ‘“Busy times we live in, dude!”, says the weed-smoker while getting laid back to manage all the information, all the news, all the technological developments running like a rush through his data-pipeline. “It’s just sick. How do I stay in touch with all that?!? I need more drugs to come down…”’. It fits perfectly, every track is a total downtempo rush whether it’s sampled, electronic or jazzy, light, heavy or dreamy.

The usual suspects include Comfort Fit, Aphilas and WillBe and are joined by great producers like Nils Hoffman, Crookram, Motown Junkie and many more. This 1 hour and 22 minutes compilation is something you can’t miss if you like damp and dusty grooves.

My man Lavarock skipped by yesterday to hand me over the new Toni Shift ‘Skip to my BeatTape 2’ Cd. It’s been a while since toni dropped the first BeatTape, so this one is more than welcome. After hearing a small preview with snippets that I really liked, I was anxious to get my hands on the full Cd.

The Cd consists of existing tracks that Toni remixed, together with a few of his own unique tracks. Such as the track ‘Day by Day’ which features Theory Hazit. Word on the street is that Toni and Theory are working on an album together. Not bad for a cat that hails from the east of our little country!

Skip to my beattape 2 back
